Television star Kate Humble was reduced to tears after discovering a tragic secret in her family history.
The BBC’s wildlife presenter was shocked when she discovered her ancestor was caught up in a mining disaster that claimed the lives of 204 men and boys in 1862. Kate’s great, great, great-grandfather, Joseph Humble, was the manager at the New Hartley Colliery in Northumberland when the tragedy occurred. He was devastated, especially as the accident claimed the life of his 27-year-old nephew, also called Joseph Humble.
However, Kate’s family history is not just tales of disaster. Her research leads her to drama in the wartime skies and a Second World War prisoner of war camp. It emerges that Kate’s grandfather, Bill Humble, was a well known RAF pilot in the Second World War.
