Registering a birth



Registering a birth in the UK should usually be registered with 42 days this includes still births which must be no later than 3 months.

If  the parents were/are married at the time of birth or conception, either the mother or the father can register the birth. If there they are not married the father may jointly register the birth.

In the case where neither the of the parents can register the certificate a relative or so one living in the same household may do so (further information click here).

Medical practitioner who was at the birth must give notice to the correct deptarments within 36 hours of the birth.

Naming the child on a birth certificate

The mother of the child has the rights to give the child any desired name. This is including the surname. The father has no right to choose weather the child carries his surname or the mothers.
